When Your Ideals Are Threatened

When you crash and burn at your first attempt working a project that cost every muscle in your body to put together, same one everybody around you felt different about, you feel the white-hot glares of scorn peel through layers of your skin like sun rays through a hundred lenses incinerating an entire colony of black ants. The only difference is this beam is sucking on your faith, seeping out your very life-force. Do you marvel how fear of failure cripples the desire to venture out into strange waters? It makes us long for support from our peers. In any case, there isn't a single thread of fault with folks sharing their dreams and aspirations with other people. The principle thing is not to leave the door too wide open so a desire for companionship morphs into a ruthless dependency; a belief we are nothing without someone else's opinion.

The quest to achieve is an inseparable element of every mans psyche; a burden to increase and multiply. To excel in a chosen field, an area of interest. And thus, fear on any level should be kept on a tight leash. I have come to terms with my weaknesses. Not compromise. I have studied and garnered ample info from my shortcomings, and I understand the limits of my abilities and strengths. I cannot deny the fact that Im inclined to make mistakes or that the best of my pains might fall through like a castle erected on sand. Nevertheless, my calling raises me up high above all limitations and plants my feet on a pedestal of sweet possibilities. And I am persuaded to declare this privileged position in which I have found myself fortifies the essence of my zeal. Faith can stand, walk, run and fly incontestable even when evidence indicates the contrary.

I stay my course trailing my own path. Besides, shaping a life is an individual responsibility. Dexterity in the mental realm and otherwise, cannot be taken out of the equation. We are heroes of what we pursue and conquer but not before we conquer nor even before we lay pursuit. Until we tread less traveled paths, experience can only be measured by a stretch of imagination like a paradise possessed from a distance. The haunting knowingness that I might walk away from the life I was programmed to multiply agitates my creativity. I sense a threat to my very existence every time I am reminded I am surrounded by opposition.

All men are prepared to accomplish the incredible if their ideals are threatened.”—Maya Angelou.

And thats why I keep a simple creed but fire it up to get me through the heat.

Coincidence: Weird or What?

I’ve been on The Tommyknockers by Stephen King, (I’m still on it, though) for a while now and on Wednesday, July 30th, 2013, I had tumbled through its pages and arrived at Saturday, July 30th of whatever year the events in the story took place. That sort of incident has a name, you know? It’s called coincidence.

This minor development kicked up something within. Driven by a need to blog more than by a sense of awe from that flimsy event, I decided to do a piece on the foible of chance events. There are some good happenstances and it’s such fun if you happen on ‘em once in a while. Peel your eyes, look around you, and visualize just how much of the inventions and gadgetry you glimpse would have been around in spite of that inspiration of the goofy variety.

And though we may not always be in a position to churn out masterpieces of the Einstein and Picasso stock from any and every coincidence, fact remains that a good deal of these special events have surprised eureka! out the mouth of many unsuspecting victims. Here, I give you two examples of the entrancing power of coincidence.

Barbary Shore,” a Norman Mailer novel about a Russian spy living in the US turned out to be quite the stuff of fairytales. After the writer completed his novel, US authorities arrested a man living in the same building on a floor above Mailer’s on allegations of being a top Russian spy. How’s that for weird?

There is a story going the rounds about Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. In the story, four characters are shipwreck survivors trapped on a boat in the open seas for several days who, instructed by starvation,

decide to cannibalize on the cabin boy named Richard Parker. In 1884, there was an actual incident; a real life-imitating-art gig that had three survivors of a shipwreck gobbling a fourth survivor, a cabin boy named… your guess is as good as mine.

What do you think triggers coincidences?
Maybe, it’s just Nature’s way of catching some fun. When it occurs sometimes, it’s a trifle ordinary it don’t deserve a mention and then it trundles in on a wave of mystic that makes our jaws drop to our chest. And that’s just one of the quirks which this phenomenon sink its teeth into and leaves us hanging, legs flailing, asking questions somehow, we know, we will never get answers to.

Who’s Calling The Shots?

We will grapple with opposition as long as there’s a world to occupy. But, tragedy is we often perceive the people (the bringers of bad luck) involved as challenges in themselves. That’s taking it a little too far, don’t you think?

You got it all wrong when you got your rage misplaced. Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean.’ (I think Maya Angelou said that.) The struggles you tackle are like chisels for carving masterpieces from artless rock. And the fools who bring ‘em are exactly that.

It’s to your credit to engage your dreams in the midst of raw opposition. There are times, it’s a natural response when you’re under heavy fire, you view your goals lurking on the other side of impossible. These are the moments you need to believe in the worth of your aspirations or you will get distracted. This is the primary objective of a conflict, what it drives for when it sneaks up on you. To steer your focus off your locus.

You ain’t going to remember pursuit of a vision when you’re way in over your head chasing after phantasmas. Turn the spotlight on bitterness for a minute. When bitterness trundles in a room with its crew, joy flies out the window. In the absence of joy and enthusiasm, your mission peels away in narrow strips in the ball of your fist.

Tons of experiences are chucked out when you waste your strength on people. Holding out under pressure opens you up to latent power, potentials buried deep within you. Like fuel to dying embers. It renews your faith in your dream.

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Time wasted can never be regained?’  While you’re busy fighting people, opposition is taking bigger chunks of your time, poisoning your dream. To pay the cost, to be the boss, to be the one calling the shots, you need to stay on the grind.

The Importance of Journaling

It would be a long time coming before tablet phones and notebooks take the place of traditional journaling.

Physical notebooks (compared to notebook apps) are practically indispensable. Your journal is where you live, where your writing–the skeletal impressions of a new idea begins to take shape. So, it ought to have a feel of home to your thoughts.

You won’t believe the speed at which thoughts vaporize. It’s only natural to grab for your notebook the moment an idea strikes a chord and jot it down. When you get home, you can go through your notes and see what’s worth developing. Many of your jots would be piecemeal but you’ll be amazed what the few that do work will turn into.

Creative thoughts are expensive and it’s careless to stow them away on the shelf of memory.

Committing thoughts to paper gives you a privilege you otherwise could not afford. The opportunity to view your ideas with your eyes, your physical eyes. Now, you can better work your way into the flow of the words and see where it leads. Your thoughts are way out there in the thick of the forest and tracking them down in your journal brings them home to you.

There’s always a chance to experiment with your ideas and imagination.

Ideas spring up every time seemingly, out of nowhere. Sometimes, it might be about a subject you’ve been meaning to rip apart and here you are in no man’s land with no way to get home (you’re not even certain you’ll remember when you do get home) on time and do your scribbling and you are stormed by a crazy bout of inspiration.

You won’t always have the luxury of paper towels to write on in an emergency and it’s possible to lose a brilliant idea without a notebook at hand.

Journaling is also about piling up intriguing stuff from your trips and saving interesting overheard conversations. It might even be the recording of a brilliant total recall of a past event, which you might improvise on at a later time in personal essays.

Notebooks are the best pals of serious writers. Never leave home without one.

Keep your pen bleeding.
