Remainder Three

Dr. Maya Angelou
Photo Courtesy: harpersbazaar.com

Full of hope

I dare to grope

Cause I know the ropes,

I believe love'll lay down the stopes.

I see no pitfalls

That you n' I can't recall.

I'm reaching out for you

And I know you're reaching out too,

Your gaze thru my eyes' piercing

All of my fears you're melting.

We zeroing in on hate,

It's been trending of late.

With this faith,

We'll run this Coup

And our expectations will rendezvous.

We were made for each other,

To build back better,

With compassion and passion

And with a measure of style.

Use love as an action word

And we'll stifle guile.

We have only one job,

One duty to our neighbor;

To love and belove.

Against these there is no law.

Love breaks down walls

It sticks closer

Than a brother

Love is stronger

Than death and lasts longer.

To top that, love is free.

Now there abides these three:

Faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is

Love.

Daddy

My father, The Rev. A .S. Akpan (!940-1995)
Passed on First of July, 1995

To catch a falling star
Is beyond a poet’s art
Still I’ll knot a handful of notes
From the string of my broken tones
Make strung chords rise like octaves
And pitch for the comet’s tail

If life was a fairytale
Who’d be the fairy godfather
But you?
If I was Aladdin
Who’d be the genie of the lamp
That’s stays true?
You are every father’s envy

An oasis of raw healing scenes
A star that keeps falling falling falling

I reach for you there
Where men cease from care

I long to catch a falling star
And bathe in the rain of sparks
An lift my face to taste your charm
Sometimes I catch on to your grace
Like vibes from radio waves
There’s nothing better than that

You do not sit in your armchair
                                  anymore
And tell me of the Savior
Who took my place on a cross;
You showed me the worth of my words
Taught me to stay creative
Much’s been said ‘bout fathers

Daddy, Daddy
You best that.

Cinderella Continent

How d'you do, Africa?
Still rocking your Soul Makossa
Sensitive like a Mimosa
Kosher like the stone of Rosetta.

How you doing, Africa?
Building bridges through massacre
Tending gardens in the Sahara;
The world's poetic Cinderella.

It is the dawn of your eureka!
So I say, Good Morning, Africa!

Mma Mi

My Mama, the Deaconess Eka Akpan celebrates one more
year on God's Earth today. Happy Birthday Mma.
"Mma mi" (/hmm ma me/) is Ibibio for My Mama.

Love needed no reason,
To set me up with a special person;
Love’s only reason was love itself,
Mma, having you translates as blessed.

I’m gonna write my manger story on you;
A prose on how faithful love beat the odds.
Wise men found a star on the night of the first Yule,
Mma, you are that ancient star in human form.

You were my anchor when I stormed thro a fog,
Your voice was the oil that stilled my troubled sob,
No room in the inns Mma, your heart was my pod:
A tested refuge from the cattle of this cold sod.

A Man Like Mandela

Nelson Mandela

Mandela,
Like Mandela,
A man like Mandela,
I wanna be a man like Mandela.

I wanna be the face of courage,
I wanna be the essence of positive rage,
I wanna be the radar that keeps focus in range.
I wanna be the prime axis of change;
I wanna be the reason to turn the page,
I wanna be the item that gets your wits engaged.

I wanna be the spotlight of my own Madiba;
I wanna be a man like Mandela.

I wanna be the symbol of what makes a man.
I wanna make solitary confinement something grand;
I wanna be the bond of unity in a divided land,
I wanna take fear and bend it into triumph.
I wanna seize emancipation with no strings attached;
I wanna make my name a synonym for survivor.

I wanna be the shape of hope and its father;
I wanna be a man like Mandela.

Mandela,
Like Mandela,
A man like Mandela,
I wanna be a man like Mandela.

The Caged Bird Still Sings

Courtesy: ifitshipitshere.com

Just in case you ever wondered why
This ball of water yet rotates on its axis
In times like these and men still wear a smile
Tho throttled on the throat by the claws of adversity,
There is a song that spins a web of strength.
Connecting all of God’s creation refueling the spent;
A lilting miracle that nudges exanimate rocks to breathe:
Does it come as a surprise the caged bird still sings?

Mr. President

Mr. President Barack Obama

How smooth I view you groove
The world moves whenever you move.
Your heart is true, your faith is strong
In you millions found rhythm and a song.

Courage’s snug in the bosom of a true friend
For you elegance has adopted a new name
You ease yourself into a task with pure grace,
You tackle it like it’s a game you was born to play.

And now you’ve gone and added beauty
To the color of black and all of humanity.
I’m cut up to say how you did the things you did,
But boundless time testifies to the glory of your story.

Glimmer of Forever

I want to live forever.
I want to witness the sun implode,
Watch all that can be shaken collapse.
Spark immortality put mortality on hold.
I want to walk on the stars.
I want to ride meteorites thro galaxies
I want to dip my toes in the moon’s scars
Hold down eternity until nothin mo exists.

I want to breathe indefinitely.
I want to stretch beyond this existence
Into another life that flows infinitely.
I want to evolve and translate my circumstance.
And when I stand on that holy mountain
I want to make sure my name will remain.
I want to bind body, soul and spirit on a tether
Cause I want to live forever.

Picture of You

To the memory of my father Rev. A. S. Akpan (1940-4eva)

With this life I’m going to paint a picture of you
Cut a canvas out of reality splash on colors so true
Erect a living effigy in my flesh offer up my body
For all time in pursuit of this solitary soulful duty;
I’m gonna walk your walk until I’m eligible to talk
Like you once did during your stay on this mortal ball,
I got a feeling I want to feel it how you took the heat
And polish, refine, weave it into the theme of my masterpiece.

Superhero

Dad passed away on first of July, 1995
He is my very own superhero. This poem is to his memory.

You stirred a flare for reading in me.
I recall crawling into the confines of your private library
Hounded by classics assuming names tricky to remember
Sometimes I call up images of your cloth-bound hardcovers;
‘On Aggression;’ ‘Try Anything Once;’ and ‘The Governor.’
On every first page a date underlined your peculiar signature.
I still picture you waving ‘English Without Tears’ in my view.
It’s hard to visualize I rode your backtrail without meaning to
Most amazing of all is how you honed my obsession for books
Makes me proud I was raised on books by an uneducated you.

I wish I could paint your face on cosmic canvas
Convey to the world your unique colors.
I wish I could spray your qualities over the horizon
In smoke Dad, may I do the sweet honors?
I got this feeling where my heart resides
That when we meet again away from this body
I’d have earned the privilege to look into your eyes
And say simply but firmly, “I am my father’s kid.”
Meanwhile, I hope it would delight you to know
That I have etched your face on everlasting stone.

A Toast

I raise a toast to the man who bent the impossible to his own will;
I give a standing ovation to him who threw himself into shaping me;
I declare you a father of fathers and hoist your fame on a plinth;
I raise my glass to all you stood for; ideals taught me from the crib.

Talons of time cannot claw the memory of you off my mind.
And since you did not quit on me I return the favor in kind.
If I live four score and seven years I’ll give each moment in time
To celebrate a gift that was the sum total of divine and sublime.

Phenomenal Man

My Father: The Phenomenal Man;
husband, father, uncle, brother, grandfather

I like to think of you as my very own superhero,
As the one who had my back from ground zero.
You had a charm about you it made you a special person;
A quality that set the strobe light on you lost in a crowd.
I’d love to hear the timbre of your voice while I give a listen;
The man I lost dishing the man I am the lowdown.
You commanded respect so crystal folks perceived it.
You were a gift to this world and I only wish they knew it.

I’ve always wondered what it takes
To stamp a foot in the prints you left behind.
It never fails to amaze me how you raised the stakes
When you presented the gift of your champion mind,
You had the inbuilt timing which made your moves flawless.
You knew the right words and the fact made me speechless.
You set a standard from which a young dream was launched.
You didn’t assert perfection but you gave it all your best shot.
