The Assassination of X

Sometime in January, Boko Haram terrorists razed a town in
North East, Nigeria killing a 'woman in labor.' In the words of a
witness, “Half of the baby boy (was) out and she died like this.”
This poem is for the unnamed boy who I called 'X.'

And who hears when we call and comes running?
Who waits up for us and keeps the lamp burning
To show the path home when twilight is dawning?
Who reaches out when we face a chasm yawning?
And swoops us up just before we keel over falling
To our deaths in a fissure that is always gnawing?

The value of x is, for all practical purposes, unresolved;
He’ll for all time be a mystery because he died unnamed,
His spot is uninhabited for he never set foot on this sod.

The death of x is, beyond all reasonable doubt, a shame;
Not he or his Mama deserved that baptism in cold blood,
No one will ever know what x was cut out for or his gain.

The tale of x is, contrary to common belief, an ill weapon
To bludgeon the foe cause he died before he came thence,
We can turn pain to gain and make them pay for our loss.

The value of our x they must be made to feel, is priceless.

Switched

For all those years I thought the Boko Haram insurgency was
an extended spell of the infamous Northern Nigeria riots

Incomplete, that’s the definition of me without a you
It’s taken me a while but the blinders are down it’s true.
I’ve seen my wrong I know I’ve been such a fool not to.
Unfeeling had me like and I said, ‘It’ll pass.’ That’s cruel.

Why do I visualize paradise but get paralyzed
By the sight of you otherwise immortalized?
I’ll rime till it’s sunrise n’ your night turns brite,
Time I switched sides, be a bona fide paradigm.

‘A few more days,’ I said, ‘and it’ll be gone with the wind.’
While you died in plain sight I let fear lax my heartstrings,
But time taught me not to wait for what tomorrow brings;
I am what brings tomorrow so I rise on a dayspring scream.

Why do I visualize paradise but get paralyzed
By the sight of you otherwise immortalized?
I’ll rime till it’s sunrise n’ your night turns brite,
Time I switched sides, be a bona fide paradigm.

Noble Cause

HAPPY 55TH INDEPENDENCE DAY ANNIVERSARY NIGERIA!
Updated: October. 8th.2015

I’m gonna fill the follicles of forever flaunting this fine moment,
Paste your name to eternity like the stars on the firmament.
I’m gon’ wring out the grime while I grind on your ingenuity,
Strive for the stupendous and stack syllables to share your story.

You are one hell of a survivor I want to take you up on the exhale.
You are spectacular it is such fun to be sprung on a stunning you.
I have found home lives in you so I pledge to sustain your fame.
There aint nothing makes me prouder n’ to bleed my pen for you.

I want to hymn the appeal of your seeds; the lost and the bombed,
This moment bonded us in ways far beyond what we could picture,
That’s why I stand up for your tomorrow; it’s death before dishonor,
I need no other argument I have found my one solitary noble cause.

WWNF

WWNF is ab for We Will Never Forget. If the on-going negotiations with
the Boko Haram terrorists means the Nigerian Govt. is just gonna let them
walk after all the deaths and sorrow they brought on school kids...
Justice is indeed blind.

Wanta negotiate but forgot the children you torched
I betcha talkin’ ‘bout how ta regain yo freedom,
I betcha forgot the scores of times you played God,
Tossing bombs and pumping slugs all up the north;
Wasting gobs of young dreams in the name of religion,
Now you feel ya’ll just gon’ turn around and spill yo
Guts and make demands? But justice is a loaded gun
On a hair trigger and its cartridge is full of lethal slugs.
The lives you destroyed rise to judge you n’ yo cohorts.
A million wasted dreams signed your eternal damnation.
The only pardon you truly deserve is hell’s own option.
Ya’ll aint gatto make demands why don’t you just pop off.

We will never forget how they died the death of a dog.
We will never forget the fatal aftermath of Postikum.
We will never forget that the earth sucked up their blood
Because you strewn their cadavers in the streets to rot.
We will never forget the camp where ya’ll tripped a bomb,
Because even when they was displaced it wasn’t enough
Until they was wasted and their names wiped off this world;
We will never forget the abductions and forced wedlock.
We will never forget the unborn burnt alive in the womb
Because you fools weren’t man enough to restrain your lust.
We will never forget the schools turned factory for bombs
We will never forgive nor forget until justice has run its course.

You will get what you so richly deserve.
Hear me Boko Haram: judgment is served.

The N. Word

Happy birthday, Nigeria!
Here have a green rose.

The only way to close a book might be to turn the page
And an offering of peace in a time may trigger rage
The land of my affection blazes at its coming of age
I shudder in the wake
Of intense hate as my strength fails
I anticipate things disintegrate into rut and decay
I cringe at the sight and before the waters break
I feel the flux of faith flush my follicles feeding in grace

And the feeling comes home
It’s who I am it’s why I am
An indivisible individual
It’s all part of a bigger game plan

I am N I am the oasis of the Sahara
I am I I eclipse the sky I’m still standing vertical
I’m a G still on the real and definitely perceptual
I am E my game is lyric like a Negro Spiritual
I am R roaring like the black Simba it’s natural
I’m the I in the sky so fly so intellectual
I’m the Ace riding the hate winning’s ritual

Did you know patience is easy if it is all you have
That the way home might lead through a graveyard
That tho Rome wasn’t built in a day the builders were Roman
My play’s first act starts as all falls apart
This too will pass my story will surpass this lame impasse
Ain’t living in denial I witnessed the bloodbaths
I saw the bodies turned to ash the aftermath of the blasts

Yet the feeling comes home
It’s who I am it’s why I am
An indivisible individual
It’s all part of a bigger game plan

I am N I am the oasis of the Sahara
I am I I eclipse the sky I’m still standing vertical
I’m a G still on the real and definitely perceptual
I am E my game is lyric like a Negro Spiritual
I am R roaring like the black Simba it’s natural
I’m the I in the sky so fly so intellectual
I’m the Ace riding the hate and winning’s ritual

A Journey Worth Bragging About

It’s been a journey worth bragging about,
A trek that ought to go the rounds.
For fifty some years tho, the tremors
Rippled the brass tacks of our faith,
The vehicle of unity conveyed us across board.
We found unity in adversity and grace
To commensurate the journey thro the pain.
It’s been a privilege to partake of that walk,
And tons of fun to champion this talk.
A legend is fifty and growing strong.

Linger

Some things cannot linger.
Like the certainty of sunrise at dawn,
Like a tune at the tip of the tongue,
Like the soul connecting distant destinies,
Like the eyes of the beholder set on beauty.

Some things must not linger.
Like me wanting to ravel you,
Wanting the whole world to know you
Through and through.

Eternal Verses

Sometimes, our inner selves only find
Expression in praise of one of great esteem.
Collecting similar fragments of dreams till it combines
In the face of a portrait that’s indeed a masterpiece.
At such times our creativeness answers only
To the pulses of our heart’s response,
To the spur of the moment.
And as we accept the urgent instance,
We truly live in the magical minute.

As I write for you, my writing dons a facade
There’s a worth in the seconds composing my days.
I value the verity that I can scribble for you,
That I can author a verse so eternally true.

Butterfly

Butterfly!
You are my butterfly!
The military juntas,
The dramas of existence,
The various bounty hunters.
You took all in your stride to prominence.
Your metamorphosis is a note of memory.
And the joy it gives to celebrate your anniversary!

Knowing You

It’s like catching the rays of the sun
With your face on a rather dull day
And riding the strength that surges through.

It’s like running a mile and picking
An overdose of second wind
And cruising to the heart of the moon.

Knowing you, knowing your name, your fame,
Knowing your ups and downs and your gains,
Is to live where the sky is always blue.

To Whom Honor Is Due

To whom honor is due,
I come to pay my dues.
To whom tribute is deserving
I present a rack of trophies.
To home and country;
For the privilege I call family.
To the differences which make us peculiar,
To the similarities for which we’re spectacular.
I raise my glass to a new beginning:
Here’s to a golden anniversary.

Requiems

Nightmares and dreamscapes,
Requiems for cursed days.
From eternal chasms of loss
To the silent minutes after,
The ship of this nation’s been rocked
And hauled to rip asunder.
Our hay days pronounced the pain.
How we did thrive in waste
Is the miracle
That bonds us as one people.

A Time of Remembering

In a time of remembering,
When the deep beckons the deep,
An echo rings through all hearts,
Naming the many faceless parts.
Desire finds his vehicle
And we, trembling, await the miracle.
